Carole Baskin (born June 6, 1961) is an American animal activist and owner of Big Cat Rescue, an animal sanctuary based near Tampa, Florida.
She gained widespread notoriety through her appearance in the Netflix documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, which explored the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo owners. The series also heavily focused on the disappearance of her second husband, Don Lewis, and fueled speculation and accusations regarding her alleged involvement in his disappearance, which she has vehemently denied. While Tiger King brought her global attention, it also sparked considerable controversy and criticism regarding her personal life and business practices.
Before her fame, she was primarily known for her animal rights advocacy. She established Big Cat Rescue as a non-profit organization with the stated mission of rescuing and rehabilitating abused and abandoned exotic cats. She advocates against the private ownership of big cats and supports legislation to ban such practices.
